North Vancouver, BC – A very successful Davis Trading Junior ITF Indoor Championships wrapped up on Saturday, October 19th at North Vancouver Tennis Centre. Organized by Tennis BC, the tournament was at near capacity featuring a record 116 players. On behalf of Tennis BC, we would like to thank all the players for participating in the tournament and congratulate them on a fantastic week of tennis.

We would also like to highlight the contribution of our main sponsor, Davis Trading & Supply Ltd. Davis Trading has supported provincial and international junior competition the past number of years in BC. Without their ongoing support, these tournaments would not be possible. This past week, 17 out of the initial 32 girls singles main draw competitors were BC representatives. The quality of BC females shone through as there was an all-BC semi final match up between Danielle Tuhten and Stefanie Frias da Silva. Tuhten won the match up and moved on to the final. Facing No. 1 seed, Jenna Defalco (USA), Tuhten took the first set 6-3 over world No. 97 ranked Defalco, however the American bounced back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-0 to take the title.

On the boys side, the singles draw was dominated by Americans. Out of the final eight quarterfinals, six were American, with the last two representing Canada. The final two Canadians included BC’s Keita Duclos, who had the biggest ITF win of his career when he defeated first seed Hanamichi Carvajal Suazo of Chile in the first round. Canadian Jayden Templeman also made a run to the semifinals before losing out to Colton Smith (USA). Smith would go on to reach the boys singles final where fellow Seattle mate, Nate Bonetto 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 ultimately won the Davis Trading title.

BC players dominated the girls doubles draw with seven out of the eight semifinalists being residents of BC. BC’s Danielle Tuhten and Reece Carter lost out to the BC-Alberta team of Leena Bennetto and Martyna Ostrzygalo 7-5, 6-1.

The boys doubles draw was highlighted by BC’s Henry Ren reaching the doubles final. Ren partnered up with Quebec’s Berk Tunali to win three hotly contested matches before falling in the final. The pair defeated the number two seeds of the tournament in the first round, squeaked out an 11-9 third set match tiebreak victory in the quarterfinals, and moved on to the final with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over the all-BC fourth seeded team. In the final, Tunali and Ren lost out to the all American team of Nedim Suko and Dominik Jakovljevic, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-10.

All semifinal and finals at the Davis Trading Junior ITF Indoor Championships featured a chair umpire along with line umpires. We would like to thank our entire officiating team for their tireless work the entire week.

We would also like to thank our fantastic volunteer, Janet Jang. Janet volunteered her time to run the tournament desk every single day and did a flawless job ensuring a smooth and efficient tournament. Lastly, thank you to our Tournament Director and Tennis BC’s Event Coordinate, Daniella Silva, for her tremendous effort in organizing this event.
