Tennis BC is proud to announce a new partnership with Summer Smash Tennis in support of their impactful Indigenizing Tennis Initiative. This collaboration marks an important step toward increasing access to tennis in Indigenous communities across British Columbia while supporting Indigenous leadership and cultural inclusion in the sport.

In 2024, the Indigenizing Tennis Initiative expanded to serve three First Nations communities: the Squamish Nation, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, and Musqueam Nation. Through fully subsidized, on-reserve programs, over 170 Indigenous children and adults were introduced to tennis, 120 children and 50 adults participated in weekly programming designed to encourage skill development, physical activity, and community connection. The initiative also extended its reach into schools through a partnership with the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council (ISPARC). At Norgate Elementary, more than 420 students, 70 of whom identify as Indigenous, took part in inclusive tennis programming.

A core part of the initiative’s success lies in its commitment to removing barriers. All participants received their own racquets, while communities were provided with essential equipment such as nets and balls to ensure continued play beyond the sessions. Another key achievement has been the investment in Indigenous coaching development. Local players were offered training and mentorship to pursue certification, with Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s Celina Dorame becoming a certified Tennis Canada Instructor. She now teaches tennis within her community, serving as a role model and trailblazer for future Indigenous leaders in the sport.

Cultural safety and relevance have been central to the program’s design. All coaches involved in the initiative completed San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, and programming was co-created with recreation leaders from each Nation to ensure it aligned with local values and traditions. In collaboration with ISPARC, Summer Smash Tennis also helped coordinate cross-community events aimed at fostering long-term engagement, including school programs and inclusive events for LGBTQ2+ youth.

This initiative is not only increasing Indigenous representation in tennis but also promoting wellness, community connection, and cultural empowerment through sport. By creating leadership pathways and supporting grassroots growth, Tennis BC and Summer Smash Tennis are working together to build a more inclusive and representative future for tennis in British Columbia.
