North Vancouver Tennis Centre – It was an action-packed four days at the 3rd Annual Tennis Troupe Year-End Annual Mixed Doubles Tournament. Taking place December 27 – 30, 2018 the event was a gender-neutral mixed doubles event.
The 6.0 category featured a round robin event in which Bob and Carol Walton went undefeated to take the top spot; however, in two of their matches the duo had to overcome a third-set match tiebreak (up to 10 points) to secure their wins. Finishing in second position were Ashley Chapman and Veronika Kryvchun, who only dropped one match to the Waltons (8-10 in the third). Cheryl and Frank Dennis finished in third place, while Hamid Khoshnevis and Lien Le finished in fourth place.
The 7.0 category boasted the largest draw with 16 teams competing. Andre Dziarmaga and Jacqueline Luft upset the #1 seeded team in the first round (Kelly Kong and Jun Yuan). Dziarmaga and Luft would then go undefeated in the event to capture the title 3-6 6-4 10-8 against #2 seeds Daisuke Oguchi and Kaoru Yamaki.
In the 8.0 category, mother-son duo Elena and Daniel Foxcroft proved to be unstoppable as they captured the title without dropping a set in the entire event. The Foxcroft’s sealed their title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Barbie-Jo and Shehzad Bharmal in the final.
Finally, the 9.0 category saw father-daughter duo of Orest and Khristina Blajkevitch reach the final and face the mother-son duo of Vivian and Allan Duong. What an interesting final to see the two families battle for the title. After dropping the first set, the Duong’s battled back to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Following the finals, a trophy presentation was held for the tournament, as well as, to present the Tennis Troupe year-end awards. The day was concluded with a potluck celebration for the players, families and spectators.
