North Saanich, BC – The 2019 Panorama International Junior ITF Tennis Championships presented by Allardyce Bower Consulting concluded this past weekend.
The event kicked off on Saturday, June 1st with the boys and girls qualifying draw. The girls qualies boasted a full draw of 16 and the boys a draw of 32. It was great to see big qualifying draws on both sides, which included many local players, as well as international players. Both draws would see four qualifiers move on to the main draw.
Main draw matches started on Monday, June 3rd. Ontario’s Kayla Cross and Alberta’s Martyna Ostrzygalo took the doubles title over BC’s Chloe Yoo and Danielle Tuhten, 6-2, 6-2 in the final. Cross has had a successful year on the West Coast so far, having won the U14 Indoor Nationals at UBC a few months ago as well.
In boys doubles, Cash Hanzlik (Portland, USA) and Dominik Jakovljevic (Seattle, USA) defeated BC’s Luka Vukovic and partner Nedim Suko (Seattle, USA), 6-4 6-3 in the final.
In girls singles, a rematch of the U14 Girls Singles Nationals Final took place. Kayla Cross captured the title over Martyna Ostrzygalo 5-7 6-4 6-3. Kayla Cross is Canada’s No. 1 ranked player in Girls U14 Singles, while Martyna Ostrzygalo is ranked No. 4.
BC’s Luka Vukovic, seeded No. 1, also had a great run in boys singles, making it to the final. Cash Hanzlik would take the title 6-3, 6-2 in boys singles. Vukovic is the top-ranked BC player in the Canadian U18 Boys Singles rankings (No. 7) and on the Junior ITF rankings. After this week’s result, Vukovic is ranked No. 339 in the world. Earlier this year in January, Vukovic reached his career high junior ITF ranking of No. 227 in the world.
