Get to know some of this week’s competitors from the Davis Trading Junior ITF Indoor Championships!

North Vancouver – The Davis Trading Junior ITF Indoor Championships are wrapping up this weekend at the North Vancouver Tennis Centre. Be sure to catch the Boys and Girls Singles Finals on Saturday!  Draws and schedules may be found here.

We had the chance to catch up with some of the players this week. Get to know Luka Vukovic, Stefanie Silvia, Niels Van Noord and Marissa Minjarez below!

Tell us a bit about yourself…
My name is Luka Vukovic. I am ranked #870 in the world U18 ITF Rankings. I’m from Vancouver and I’m 16 years of age.

Have you played this event before?
Yes, I played two years ago.

Favourite shot?
Slice

What are you future goals?
To become a professional tennis player.

Favourite players? Who inspires you and why?
Fabio Fognini, because he is so loose on the court.

What are some of your other hobbies?
Basketball, Soccer, Hockey

What do you love listening to before your match?
I don’t listen to music before I play, I like to sit in silence and get my head in the game.

How long have you been playing on the ITF Tour? Is this your first experience playing in an ITF event?
I have been playing ITF events since I was 14.

What are your thoughts on it? What did you learn? What are you biggest takeaways from this experience?
My biggest takeaway from this week is how to really be disciplined in between matches.

What do you enjoy most about playing this event?
I used to train at the North Vancouver Tennis Centre and I love coming back. I now train with Oded Jacob at the North Shore Winter Club.

What is your favourite tournament to play in?
ITF level events

 

 

Tell us a bit about yourself…
My name is Stefanie Silva and I am 13 years old. I have dual nationality between Portugal and Canada. I was actually born in Winnipeg, but have lived in Vancouver for the past 6 years.

Have you played this event before?
This is my first time playing this tournament.

Favourite shot?
My favorite shot is my forehand.

Favourite players? Who inspires you and why?
My favorite player is Roger Federer. His fluidity and smoothness on the court is amazing.

What are some of your other hobbies?
In my spare time I love to read, horse ride and play with my two golden retriever dogs. 

How long have you been playing on the ITF Tour? Is this your first experience playing in an ITF event?
I just started playing on the ITF tour this past summer. However, this tournament has been my most successful by far. Beating the second seed in singles who is ranked in the 500s in the ITF rankings has been my highest singles win so far.  I am also in the doubles final for the first time.

What are your thoughts on it? What did you learn? What are you biggest takeaways from this experience?
I am thankful for my family and friends who unconditionally support me not only in tennis but in everyday life.

My name is Neils Van Noord. I am ranked #594 on the U18 ITF World Rankings and 20th U18 in Canada. I am from Quebec and I am 17 years old.

Have you played this event before?
Yes, last year.

Favourite shot?
Serve – trick shots!

What are you future goals?
To obtain a full-ride scholarship to a university, then play pro. Top picks for universities are Charlotte, Florida or Georgia.

Favourite players? Who inspires you and why?
Roger Federer

What are some of your other hobbies?
Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Hockey

What do you love listening to before your match?
Rap

How long have you been playing on the ITF Tour? Is this your first experience playing in an ITF event?
4 years, since I was 13.

What are your thoughts on it? What did you learn? What are you biggest takeaways from this experience?
I enjoy travel and getting to know new people and learning about new cultures.

What do you enjoy most about playing this event?
Practicing and playing with different internationally ranked players, and ITFs award higher ranking points.

How did you play?
Last year I did better in doubles and this year I got to the semifinals. I did better this year in singles, which is great.

What is your favourite tournament to play in?
ITFs and I am getting to play the Australian Open in January. I will probably play in the qualifying event, but I am really excited about it!

My name Marissa Minjarez. I am ranked 500 in the USA. I am from California, and I am 16 years old.

Have you played this event before?
No, this is my first time.

Favourite shot?
Forehand down the line

What are you future goals?
To play at a four year university in Southern California.

Favourite players? Who inspires you and why?
Caroline Wozniacki, she is so classy and has a different personality.

What are some of your other hobbies?
Movies and adventures with friends

What do you love listening to before your match?
Rap

How long have you been playing on the ITF Tour? Is this your first experience playing in an ITF event?
This is my first time playing in an ITF event.

What are your thoughts on it? What did you learn? What are you biggest takeaways from this experience?
I didn’t know anyone when I arrived, I had to put myself out there when it comes to everything, from warm ups to getting to know my doubles partner.

Why did you choose to play this event?
I wanted to broaden my horizons and create new opportunityes.

What do you enjoy most about playing ITF level events?
Everyone has the same goals, so it’s nice to connect on a higher level with players from different countries.

How did you play?
This wasn’t my best week, it’s a different style than the US tournaments.

What is the most interesting thing that happened this week?
Living in California, I am used to playing on outdoor courts, I rarely, if ever, play on indoor courts.

What is your favourite tournament to play in?
This ITF, because it’s an international event.

It was Canadian Thanksgiving this past week, what are you thankful for?
Thankful for having the opportunity to be in Vancouver, play on indoor courts and make new friends.
