Highlights of KitsFest BeachTennis 2011

Beach Tennis was back at KitsFest for 2011, and included some international flare with teams from Ireland, Spain, and Cuba in the competition.  As the sun lit up the beach, you couldn't find a better back-drop for the event that ran side by side with the basketball, beach hockey, and beach volleyball.  An extremely balanced competition of matches with outstanding dives and lunges to keep play alive entertained all in the round robin competition.

The championship bracket on Sunday was strong and started with the semi-finals pitting two NCAA Div.1 University of Portland tennis players (Guay and Gill) vs. the defending champs Santoso and Salvo.  The other semi-final pitted the athletic Cuban team of Lopez & Lopez against Irish favorites (Barry & Boland).

The final results finished with the defending champs of Santoso and Salvo retaining their Kings of Beach Tennis title over Ireland's duo of Barry and Boland. 3rd place went to Lopez & Lopez over Guay and Gill

Thank you to all competitors for a very fun weekend of play in the sun!

Beach Tennis will be back at KitsFest in 2012, check tennisbc.org for updates during the year on other new Beach Tennis events for 2012

WHAT IS BEACH TENNIS?

Take the fun and fast-paced sport of tennis... combine it with the sun, sea and sand of the beach... and you have beach tennis, the most electrifying new sport to hit North America.

So what exactly is beach tennis? It’s like regular tennis except it’s played on a regulation beach volleyball court. Using beach tennis paddles, two players on each team volley back and forth, hitting a slightly depressurized tennis ball directly over the net without letting it bounce... it’s hard to make the ball bounce on sand! One hit per team is all that’s allowed.

Your team scores a point each time your opponents hit the ball outside the lines or let it hit the sand.

The Rules:

Find a Partner - Doubles and Mixed Doubles Only
Beach Tennis Racquets and Low Compression Balls Mandatory
No Set-ups or Passes - Ball must go over in one shot
Tennis Scoring - Best out of three sets, tie break at 6 all
Second Chances don't exist - No Add Scoring
It's not badminton, but the ball can't bounce
Division 1 Rules apply - No Lets on Serve
