Winter Leagues

Winter Leagues

Team Tennis (also known as league play) provides good opportunities for social and competitive tennis, especially during the winter months when court time can be at a premium.  Many clubs run their own “in-house leagues” but several clubs also support leagues that include players from other clubs.   These leagues are not sanctioned by Tennis BC, and do not require the participants to be Members, but most are played at Member Clubs.

Senior Men’s League
For the 2011 – 2012 season, teams from seven participating clubs play against each other twice (home and away matches) fielding four courts on a weekend afternoon.  Requirements are minimum age 35, but the team combinations have to add up to 80 years on Court 1, 100 years on Courts 2 and 3, and 120 years on Court 4.  The home team provides the balls; and post game refreshments.  Following the regular season (September to early February) there is a playoff and a celebratory dinner.   New teams (with indoor facilities, minimum 4 courts) are welcome for the 2012-2013 season.

Masters’ Tennis at the Delta Town and Country Inn
This is a fun ladies’ doubles league that plays on Fridays in the fall and winter.  It is open to anyone who admits to being 35 years of age or older! and is an opportunity to have a good game of tennis, meet new people and make new friends in a social atmosphere.  Tennis ability runs from 2.0 to 4.0 levels.

The annual membership fee for the Masters’ Association is $10, and the program fee is payable at the start of each session - the fall session runs from mid-October to the end of November.  The winter session runs from mid-January to the end of February.  There is a luncheon on the last Friday of each session.  People often gather for coffee after their game.

Ladies’ Dogwood League

Another friendly daytime league, which offers three separate levels of play between September and March.

Dogwood 1 (spring leagues divisions 1 and 2) has 14 teams, Dogwood 2 (spring league divisions 3 and 4) has 8 teams, and Dogwood 3 (spring league division 5) has 6 teams.  Games are typically two sets with the option of either a third set or a deciding match tie-break.  Although scores are not published and there are no winners or losers in the divisions, play is competitive. All matches are doubles, on three courts, with the home team supplying balls and post game refreshments – usually coffee and muffins.

New teams or new clubs wishing to participate should contact  Maureen Milledge at hmciay@gmail.com so that their name can be added to the list.  The initial email for the winter season is sent in mid-August with the scheduling meeting planned for early September.
