Oak Bay1

Oak Bay2

Region: Vancouver Island
Category: Gold

Description:
HISTORY
The history of the Oak Bay Tennis Club dates back to 1911, when it was founded by the B.C.
Electric and Railway Company for the recreation of its employees at a nearby location.
Acquisition of the current site between Bowker and Cavendish Avenues began in 1912, with
additions to the property completed in 1938. In the late 1950’s, with fewer B.C. Electric
employees playing at the club, and a greater number of non-employees playing, discussions
began of the club becoming first self-supporting, and then eventually separate from the
company. Through the efforts of founding members, the Oak Bay Tennis Club was registered
as a non-profit society in 1964, and the property was purchased from B.C. Electric that same
year. The club recently celebrated its one hundredth anniversary.
FACILITY
The club is located within an attractive, quiet residential neighbourhood. The club is fenced with
keypad controlled entrances, and is surrounded by tall hedges and trees that enhance the
property.
Three doubles courts, and one singles court are available, all recently improved with a
plexicushion hard-court surface.
An original small rectangle clubhouse built in 1923 served for many years, and was replaced in
1984 with the current architect-designed structure that provides an inviting place to meet and
socialize. The clubhouse has basic change-room facilities and basic kitchen amenities.
There is in addition a practice area with a backboard, gardens, viewing area with seating, and a
utility shed.
MEMBERSHIP
The club currently has 430 adult members, 100 junior members, 21 out-of-town members, and 6
lifetime members. There are presently approximately 325 people on the adult waiting list, and
100 people on the junior waiting list. The current wait for adults is about eight years after first
making application to becoming a member.
The demographic of club membership ranges from juniors to super-seniors, and includes
individuals, couples, and families. Governance, management, and many of the club’s
operations are performed by volunteers.
