Vernon Tennis Association1

Vernon Tennis Association2

Region : Okanagan / Interior
Category : Facility

Description:
VERNON TENNIS ASSOCIATION (VTA) – Contact: Jackie Labuhn, jlabuhn@shaw.ca or www.vernontennis.com
The VTA was established under the BC Societies Act in October 2008 with approximately 60 members in the first season and up to 110 members in the 2014-15 season. Our membership includes all ages from juniors, adults to seniors. The VTA is a seasonal, outdoor tennis association that rents a 4-court lighted facility (Marshall Field Courts) from the City of Vernon on an annual basis. We are a non-profit public tennis association whose membership fees [$70/adult, $35/student (under 18 yrs.), and a family membership] pay for the rental of the courts. Our hours of operation are governed by the City of Vernon, Parks and Recreation Department. Our season is governed by the amount of fees collected and how much we pay for rent. The season is usually from the last week of April to the end of September. At present, our members have reserved court time between the hours of 6:30 pm. and 8:30 pm. Monday to Friday. Different programs are run on each of these evenings. Wednesday and Thursday evenings are extended to include a 4.0+ level league for men and women at that level. There is also a Saturday morning reserved court time between 9:00 am. and 11:00 am. Because the courts are public courts, some of our members arrange their own matches at times other than the above “reserved” court times.
In addition to the drop-in and league play, the VTA runs an annual 8-week Junior Tennis Program every July and August on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 – noon for budding tennis players 6-13 years old. Participants register in advance for this program. The Fee in the 2015 season was $35/child for the entire 8 weeks. Children are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced groupings for each hour. The VTA hires a Tennis BC Certified Instructor for this program.

The VTA Mission Statement includes the following:
• The Vernon Tennis Association shall work towards educating its members and the population of the Greater Vernon area as to the social and physical benefits of playing and supporting tennis.
• The Association will offer professional tennis instruction, tournament play, and league competition to its membership, residents of Greater Vernon, and the surrounding area, as a means of enhancing Community relations in general.
• The Association will provide a legal body to coordinate tennis activities within the community, between other communities, and with tennis organizations such as Tennis BC and Tennis Canada, that have similar interests.
• The Association will also actively encourage and solicit the development of new tennis facilities enabling outreach to more tennis players in the Vernon area.
