Langford, BC – It’s been almost two years since Bear Mountain Resort opened it’s eight red clay-court tennis facility at the foot of Mount Finlayson. This is the resort’s third anchor sport and recreation amenity to complement its already established 36 holes of Nicklaus Design golf and destination mountain bike and hiking trails.
A welcome addition to the tennis community and a key partner for its growth in Victoria Bear Mountain Tennis Centre (BMTC) is led by one of Canada’s leading Tennis Directors, Russ Hartley, Head Pro Sean Hartley and a team of Tennis Canada Certified Professionals. They have been busy hosting regional and provincial level events and facilitating programs including school outreach and world-class learning experiences with group and private coaching.
Supported by Tennis Canada and Tennis BC, the BMTC is western Canada’s largest indoor/outdoor red clay tennis facility. Members of the BMTC from all over the Island – as far north as Nanaimo, through Mill Bay and all-over Greater Victoria – are thrilled with the opportunity to play the clay. The most forgiving surface in tennis, clay is better for the joints, tends to slow the ball and creates longer rallies. It offers a unique experience for players of all ages and skill levels.
Hartley contends you need to try the clay to believe the difference from other court surfaces. “Most people have had very little exposure to clay — this is not just another set of eight hard courts,” he says. “Once you play on it, you realize it’s so good on the body, you can play for hours.”
Following a successful first summer season, work turned to preparations for the installation of the BMTC’s first bubble in October 2018.
Players enjoy 90-minute court time periods in the spacious heated four-court bubble that is climate-controlled with energy efficient lighting and includes a centre court lounge area.
The bubble remains up for winter play starting in October until the spring season kicks off in late April/early May when it comes down for the outdoor season.
“This is the nicest and largest four court bubble I have seen anywhere,” says Hartley. “With the central interior viewing area and generous court spacing, it’s close to the size of a five court bubble. Factor in the 48 count LED suspended lighting design and the 40’ ceiling height, and it has an almost cathedral like impact when you enter the courts.”
“Members and guests are absolutely blown away,” says Hartley. “One member, who happens to be the President of another local club remarked, “I have nothing to say, it’s absolutely perfect.”
